The Box House is located in a busy residential area in Edappally, Kerala. Its name comes from the rectangular shapes used in the design, giving it a minimalist and geometric look. The house, which spans 7,500 square feet over two floors, stands out in the crowded neighbourhood. One of the main challenges in designing the house was balancing the need for privacy and openness due to the close proximity of neighbouring houses on three sides.
Upon entering the house, you're greeted by an open plan layout that includes a foyer, guest living area, family living space, dining room, and open kitchen, all seamlessly connected and merging with a partially covered, double-height backyard. This yard, filled with thick vegetation, acts as a visual barrier from the outside while allowing maximum natural light and ventilation. The open plan design ensures privacy without making the house feel closed off, meeting the client's desire for a blend of openness and seclusion. Each space within the open plan is distinct, marked by unique furniture pieces, varying levels, and different floor finishes.
Inside, the house features a customised painting of Ganesha in the foyer, abstractly styled to match the modern interior theme. The guest living area has a double-height volume, highlighted by a sleek red sofa and green accent chairs, with bird wall decors adding a sense of infinity. The dining room, also with a double-height ceiling, is bathed in natural light from large glass windows, creating a magical atmosphere. Each bedroom is carefully designed to balance form and function, reflecting the personality of its user. The house's luxurious interior is achieved through a rich material palette, vibrant colours, and meticulously curated furniture and artworks. Even the bathrooms are uniquely styled, with elegant tiles and functional accents reflecting each user's aesthetic preferences.
